Reflective Journal 3 (Is Sadaqah a sustainable act?)

  Is sadaqah a sustainable act? As Muslims, we are encouraged to give sadaqah to the poor and needy. Allah has mentioned in Al-Quran (Al-Baqarah: 261) The example of those who spend their wealth in the way of Allah is like a seed (of grain) which grows seven spikes: in each spike is a hundred grains. And Allah multiplies (His reward) for whom He wills. And Allah is all-Encompassing and Knowing. The benefits of sadaqah are outlined clearly and precisely in the Al-Quran. However, it is time to question the sustainability of the act itself.  Some individuals will set aside some funds from their salary every month to do charity with the intention of wealth cleansing. Some people will do targeted charity like they will give sadaqah to a selected low-income household by giving necessities and food supply every month. Reflective Journal 2 (education system)

During the last class, the teacher told us to discuss Malaysia’s higher education systems’ problems. From the discussion, I found that many students are studying for grades and academic qualifications to the extent some have lost sense of morality. In my opinion, ethics plays a crucial role in establishing a civilized society. However, secularism and capitalism have pressured the students to cross the boundaries set by moral standards and shariah. Social problems such as GRO culture have ruined these students’ morality. These individuals, a part of it, driven by the desperation of earning pocket money and tuition fees, start to sell themselves to afford the financial commitments.  When thinking of a problem, we couldn’t avoid questioning what the root cause is.
