The Covid cases in Malaysia don’t seem to go down in the nearest future. Therefore to curb the spread there are SOPs established for people to abide by. However, since January 2021 when the Malaysian government has announced a political state of emergency where the Parliament is halted from any conference. The initial purpose of this emergency state stated by our prime minister is to focus on fighting Covid-19. Since then, there so many changes and alteration without consultation of different parties and stakeholders to the SOPs and as a result has made the whole SOP become really vague and unclear for the people. Violation of the SOPs could cause a person to be fined up to RM50,000.
Public spaces like night market, malls and entertainment premises are allowed to operate. Social events also are being held and mass gathering is still allowed. It is huge deception that these gatherings are held without violating the SOP, it is impossible to practice social distancing.
Some influencers and people with power are crossing district borders by abusing the working permit from PDRM to went for a honeymoon, visiting relatives and hold social gathering which doesn’t practice social distancing and yet these people preach about the following SOP. When the rakyat violates SOP, the authorities instantly issue a summon, meanwhile when influential people did it, the process suddenly becomes longer they need to open investigation files and all.
For a student to be fined RM 3,000 because of pulling down the mask when they are in a campus cafeteria trying to eat is a very inconsiderate move. Considering the area is not crowded and the students are being isolated from going outside from the campus, it is totally fine. How can the student afford to pay the fine?
See how the double-standard in practising the SOPs, the people are forced to limit their movement, some are closing their business because they couldn’t survive.
Why does double-standard happen? Double-standard happens because the authority, influential people abuses their title to conceal their negative sides. They think by having the title and influence they are above the law. BECAUSE IT IS A MAN-MADE LAW. I have to say this in Malay: “Larangan Allah pun kau langgar, lagilah MAN-MADE LAW.” Allah has ordered us to follow our leaders (An-Nisa’: 59) therefore we listen and practised what they want us to do. But shouldn’t they practice what they preach? As a Muslim, I understand that the SOPs made and lockdown issued is to fulfil the Maqasid Shariah to protect lives however judging by the way how our government handle this pandemic, it’s not getting any better and making the people angrier at the government.
The constant increase in the number of positive cases isn’t going to affect them and if the government issued a total lockdown, shutting down the economy, not allowing people to perform business, the people are the ones who are going to suffer from financial crises while these privileged people can stay unbothered at their homes comfortably. Also, there are some people who violate the SOP and using the behaviour of these irresponsible influencers to justify their actions. That doesn’t change the fact that your action would cause the surge in covid cases.
Therefore, on a personal level, I need to stay calm and keep following the SOPs provided by the government staying at home and practice social distancing and personal hygiene s that I will not be infected by the virus nor affect others. Also, I will be taking the vaccine on the 23rd of May to perform my responsibility as a Malaysian to achieve herd immunity so that our country can be free from the virus and everything will go back to normal.
