In mid-April 2021, a 17-year old female student, Ain Husniza returned home from school and made a TikTok video exposing her teacher of making rape jokes during class. She received much support from netizens as well as backlashes from her school and classmates for being vocal about the issue.
From that viral TikTok video, she started an internet trend using the hashtag #MakeSchoolASaferPlace and that received thousands of support from netizens. As a girl, Ain believed that rape jokes are not supposed to be normalized. Therefore she stands firm in her stance and for that she received a rape threat from one of his male classmates. Knowing that this could risk Ain’s safety, her parents lodged a police report and made Ain absent from school. Some of her friends that initially supported her also turned their backs on Ain saying that she was supposed to not make a huge issue out of it. Ain’s bravery to call out these disgusting behaviours are made fun and some people also made lewd remarks on her body and worst these people belong to the education sector.
From my perspective, what Ain is trying to do is to create a safer environment for students to get their education by reaching out to the authorities with policy-making power. Nobody deserves to be sexually harassed because it could trigger trauma within an individual. Sexual harassment happens from the normalisation of sex jokes. When people make that kind of joke it is considered a joke when it isn’t. It’s not even funny to joke about someone’s trauma.
However, why does sex and rape jokes are being normalised? In my opinion, sexual jokes happen due to the exposure to pornography content in which is widely spread on the web nowadays. Teens and children with a digital device could easily access pornography without adults supervision. They sexualize and objectify people’s bodies. These harassments not just only happen to females but also to males. Therefore, there is no where safe as long as these pornography culture is being normalised.
To see how far these pornography culture are in our society, even individuals who make an effort to educate people about sex education are being harrased especially on social media. Their comment sections are flooded with dirty minded people when all they want to do is to educate the social media users.
People are learning about sex through the wrong way which is through pornography consumption. Therefore it is really important to infuse sex education in the education syllabus. We shall not have the stigma of talking about sex as a dirty discussion, we should emphasize other things like female menstruation cycle for example which is a crucial part of human reproduction. Stop making sex education as a taboo. In islam also emphasizes to perform obligatory bath which everyone should have the knowledge because if doesn’t perform it will result in our ibadah is invalid.
